Welcome! I'm John Philcox
I'm a professional proofreader and copy-editor based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, UK, working with authors and publishers on fiction and non-fiction.
I offer careful, thorough proofreading, copy-editing and proof-editing while respecting an author's individual voice and writing style. Whether your manuscript needs a final polish before publication or more detailed editorial attention, my aim is to help make your writing clear, consistent and ready for your readers.
Fiction
I have recent experience proof-editing and proofreading independently published fiction, including a middle-grade/YA fantasy-horror novel and a short story. As a reader, I have a particular interest in thrillers, psychological thrillers, crime and suspense, so I would especially welcome the opportunity to work with authors in these genres.
Non-fiction and technical editing
I have extensive experience in technical writing and editing, backed by a 45-year professional career in computing and IT.
I am the author of two traditionally published computing books, contributed to two further titles. I also worked as a freelance technical editor on eight books for major US publishers. This experience has given me a valuable understanding of the publishing process from both sides of the author–editor relationship.
What you can expect
Your work will always be treated with care and respect. I pride myself on attention to detail, clear communication and meeting agreed deadlines, while ensuring that editorial changes preserve your individual voice.
"With a laser eye, John Philcox works above and beyond to ensure your work is its best. From day one to end of proofreading Lôn Cof, he has been professional, punctual and kind. I recommend anyone seeking John's services to contact him."
— Harry Williams, author of Lôn Cof
Let's discuss your project
If you'd like to discuss a manuscript or other project, please get in touch. It helps if you can include:
- the type of editorial service you're looking for;
- the approximate word count;
- your preferred timescale or publication deadline; and
- any other information you think would be useful.
If you're unsure whether you need proofreading, copy-editing or proof-editing, that's absolutely fine – I can help you decide which service would be most appropriate for your manuscript.
